What’s the Story?
Do you like period piece murder mystery thrillers? How about a one that runs for 32 volumes? Then you may enjoy Michael Jecks’ Knights Templar Series, the first of which is titled, The Last Templar (currently only $.99 for Kindle).
In this tale we follow Simon Puttock, in the year 1316, as he adjusts to his new office as bailiff of Lydford Castle. Upon his new appointment arrives a strange, but attractive, knight to the area, Baldwin Furnshill, and then things begin to go sideways. A couple deaths later Simon is on the hunt seeking to fulfill his duty and protect those under his charge. I want to write a bit more to lure you in, but you know, it is a mystery and I don’t want to spoil anything!
Why Do I Like It?
The Last Templar sets the stage for an intriguing story. I happen to like to mysteries, and this is a fair one. For Mr. Jecks’ first novel, I think he has done a great job and if the next 31 novels are improvements, one on another, then count me in. The tale is well told and it does not devolve to titillation of lurid images, and unlike so many modern authors, there is not one gratuitous sex scene. Jecks’ uses a The Last Templar to show us duty, love, courage over fear, and the moral dilemmas that come with a world of sinners.
Oh, and you get to learn a bunch of neat words like: trailbastons, mien, misericord, aspic jelly, villein and explore locations with great names like: Oakhampton, Copplestone, Moretonhampstead, and Devonshire.
Michael Jecks is not limited to the Knights Templar Series, but he has written a whole truckload of books for you to dabble in, and I suggest you do!
